What is Cowork

A desktop workspace where you and Claude get work done.

Getting Started

Requirements & your first task.

Cowork has a few prerequisites and a simple 3-step launch. Here's everything to know before you begin.

Requirements

Claude Desktop app
macOS or Windows (x64). Not available on web or mobile.
Paid Claude subscription
Available on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.
Active internet connection
Required throughout your session. Cowork won't work offline.
Keep Claude Desktop open
Closing the app ends your session. Leave it running while Claude works.

Accessing Cowork

1
Open Claude Desktop
Launch the Claude Desktop app. Make sure you're on the latest version for the best Cowork experience.
2
Switch to Cowork
Find the mode selector at the top. Click the "Cowork" tab to switch from Chat to Tasks mode.
3
Describe your task
Tell Claude what you want done. Review the approach it proposes, then let it run. Be specific — outcomes beat vague instructions.

Your first task — a walkthrough

1
Describe the outcome you want
Be specific about what done looks like. "Organize my Downloads folder by type and date" beats "clean up files." The more concrete your goal, the better the result.
2
Review Claude's plan
Claude will share its approach before executing. This is your moment to steer — add context, change scope, or redirect if needed.
3
Monitor or step away
Watch progress in real time, or come back when it's done. Tasks can run for extended periods — just keep Claude Desktop open.
4
Get finished outputs
Claude delivers results directly to your file system or connected tools. No copy-pasting required.
Under the Hood

How Cowork runs your tasks.

Cowork runs directly on your computer, giving Claude access to the files you choose to share. Code runs safely in an isolated virtual machine.

01
Analyzes request
Reads your prompt and creates a structured plan of action.
02
Breaks into subtasks
Complex work is divided into smaller, manageable pieces.
03
Executes in VM
Works in an isolated virtual machine environment — safe from your main system.
04
Parallelizes
Sub-agents coordinate multiple workstreams simultaneously for speed.
05
Delivers output
Finished files are placed directly in your file system.
Transparency built in
Claude surfaces its reasoning at every step. You can jump in to course-correct or provide additional direction at any time.

What to expect during a task

📶 Progress indicators
See what Claude is doing at each step — no black box. Every action is visible.
🎯 Steering mid-task
Jump in to course-correct or add context mid-task. Claude adapts on the fly.
🤝 Parallel work
For complex tasks, Claude may coordinate multiple sub-agents working simultaneously.
🛡️ Deletion protection
Claude always asks for explicit permission before permanently deleting any files. You always approve first.
Features

Projects, Plugins & Scheduled Tasks.

Three power features that let you customize, automate, and specialize your Cowork experience.

A Project is a dedicated workspace with its own files, context, instructions, and memory — backed by a real folder on your computer.

📝 Instructions
Tone, formatting rules, follow your playbook — set once, applies to every task in the project.
🔁 Global tasks
Recurring work scoped to this project — no need to re-explain.
📁 Context
Linked folder, linked Chat projects, URLs — all the reference material Claude needs.
🧠 Memory
What you've worked on, scoped to this project. Builds up over time.
A
Start from scratch
New folder, fresh context. Good for a brand new workstream or client.
B
Import from chat
Bring files and instructions from an existing Claude Chat conversation into a Project.
C
Use an existing folder
Wrap a folder you already have on your computer. Great for ongoing work.
Global Instructions (Settings → Cowork) still apply across all projects — for preferences that don't change.

Safety & Best Practices

Permissions, limits & troubleshooting.

Cowork is built with safety by design. Here's what you need to know about how it protects your files and manages usage.

Permissions & safety

🖥️ VM isolation
Claude operates in a virtual machine on your computer, separate from your main operating system.
📂 Controlled file access
You grant permission for which files Claude can access. Review actions before allowing changes.
🌐 Network permissions
Cowork respects your network egress permissions. You control Claude's internet access level.
🗑️ Deletion protection
Claude requires explicit permission before permanently deleting files. You always approve first.
Important

Cowork stores conversation history locally on your computer. Activity is not captured in Audit Logs, Compliance API, or Data Exports. Do not use Cowork for regulated workloads.

Usage limits & tips

Cowork tasks consume more usage than standard chats because multi-step tasks are compute-intensive. Here's how to get the most from your allocation.

1
Batch related work
Group related tasks into a single session to reduce overhead. Instead of five separate tasks, describe all five in one prompt.
2
Chat for simple tasks
Use standard Chat for quick questions that don't need file access or long execution. Reserve Cowork for complex, multi-step work.
3
Monitor your usage
Check Settings → Usage to track how much of your allocation you've used. Plan bigger tasks accordingly.

Common questions

"Preparing your workspace" — what does this mean?
+
This is expected — Cowork is getting its environment ready. Give it a moment. It typically appears at the start of a new session as the VM spins up.
Claude stopped working mid-task
+
Make sure the desktop app stayed open. If your computer went to sleep, the session may have ended. Reopen the app and resume or restart the task.
Hitting usage limits
+
Cowork uses more tokens than Chat. Reserve it for complex, multi-step tasks. Batch related work into fewer, larger sessions to reduce overhead and extend your allocation.
Files not appearing in output
+
Check that you've granted Claude the right file access permissions when prompted. Also verify the output location — Claude places files in the folder you specified or the default output directory.

Now it's your turn.

Pick a plugin that matches your role. Install it in seconds, then hand Cowork a real task from your week.
